Backstory / Approach / Early Concepts – Dated August, 2022
For a new project we’re working on, we’re working on creating new realms of physical space built around the hodgepodge of emotional-analysis that culminates in desires, pleasures, needs, and joys: physical moments of communal joy that propagate antithetical-to-mass-culture perceptions of human-togetherness, offering up new realities (not just alternatives), while violently annihilating cultural forces of maliciousness and exploitation.
My friends and their pals should be joyous when dancing…not cautious, looking over their shoulder for the next aggressor or exploiter.
For my part, dancing and music is my current focal point, but there’s plenty of friends and comrades who have their own situations to create and center. Safe and joyous spaces are intentionally created, not haphazardly motioned too. It means very little if a club or dance event has designated people to seek help from if the influx of bad actors isn’t dealt with. Toxic masculine shitheads who use substances to effortlessly circumnavigate people’s boundaries and bodies will not be effectively dealt with via glorified moderators, marshalls, and chaperons.
To create safe and joyous situations, it must be proactive, strategic, and communally controlled. I don’t trust the equivalent of crossing guards to keep us safe when there’s no limits to who gets to drive. We keep us safe!
This new project will center not only particular individuals’ creative outputs (DJing, hosting, decorating, etc), but will encourage general creative output in and during the situation. One idea is to have dedicated sections for people to create art for the space: a growing communal collection of creative expression. Another could be experimenting with clothing. And another, a space to make photos and videos. Etc.
Situations like these should encourage our collective and individual agency.
Society and culture as a whole oppressively limit our potential moments for agency. They rob us of joyous expression, commodify our existences, bully us into complacency and rigidness through a variety of exploitative and subjugating forces, and homogenize every beautiful forceful difference into one giant mush of blandness. Shit’s gotta change.
Shit will only change if we decide to take control…
Create situations instead of hoping to find nice moments of tranquility within the commodified belly of the exploiting leviathan. We won’t find peace within the predator’s city.
It’ll also be truly underground. This shit aint gonna be livestreamed, publicized, instagramed, or otherwise spread via mainstream and now hyper-commodified avenues of internet “communication.” Certain people shouldn’t know. We don’t allow everyone. Not all are welcome. This isn’t a spectacle, or a fuckin’ clout chase.
There’s no future for us within the leviathan.
Trustful communal ties centered around anti-exploitation and against the empire and all it stands for is how we keep us safe.
Reworking the same old modes of “communication” (read: exploitation of human connection) is textbook incompetence. We must be aware of the past and present, to shape the future. Who do we need to “reach” if we’ve created human connections imperceivable to the inhuman network of capital’s exchange value?
No followers, no influencers.
